The fish ID authority
This is the set of books we used at Utila Dive Center in Honduras, where I took my divemaster and instructor courses.
It really is the go to authority on ID books.
The way they have the fish classified and sorted is designed for finding fish/creatures/coral based on what they look like, not what they are called.
Being familiar with the way the book is laid out allows you to go diving with an idea of basic features to look for in a fish. Then with those easy to remember features you can find the exact section in the book where your fish will be. Then you just have a few pages to flip through to identify your fish, instead of hundreds.
I've seen several other fish ID books, and a lot of them are arranged taxanomically; which would be great for a marine biology course in college; but as a diver, I would likely forget what my fish looked like by the time I found it in a book like that.
This book tells habitats and depths of the fish, as well as behavior. Which is nice, certain blennies may look similar to others, but when you want to describe to a friend how the one you saw looked like it was dancing on the sand, the book will verify the name of the specific one that acts that way.
