Superb comedy-drama; with songs!
Great tragic story with comic and musical overtones. Garland and, especially, Mason are superbly believable. Arlen/Gershwin score is top-flight. One of the best films of the 1950's.

The Jackie Susanne of 19th century France.
Flashes of provocative sexual/sensual description; but too much boring character delineation. Also translation was Brit centered, old fashioned and prissy, calling her ass 'her backside'.' A kick up the backside.' Nonetheless, Zola, here, is the Jackie Susanne of 19th century France. Book was a scandal when it came out.

Overview of Civilization through its Historians.
If you're interested in learning the tales of the historians, this is a happy celebration of them, from Herodotus and Thucydides up to Churchill and Barbara Tuchman, touching on Machiavelli along the way. Filled with anecdote and brimming with personal insight, this overview inadvertently offers a parade of Western civilization.
