Excellent laptop. Great value for the money.
This purchase replaces 2004 Gateway w/XP used for home and business. I needed a hardy laptop with adequate memory, speed, plenty of slots, CD/DVD drive, and Windows 7 (not 8). My neighbor's VIAO (same model) has been performing well in a tough environment of dogs, babies, drops, transport, etc. I fell in love with the Glacier White color/texture. Review comments were good, but prices were all over the map! Used and rebuilt were much as new, and new was out-of-stock most places. Figured that indicated a good machine. Happily found it on e-Bay for what I wanted to spend. No manual, but apparently everything is on the internet now. Sony's VIAO website and manual are excellent. Laptop is as described by other users -- both the good and bad. Bad: no backlit keyboard (desired) but can live without; and the speakers are terrible, but cheap "bullet" speaker does the job as it's not used for entertainment, gaming, or making videos. I haven't tested the card slots, camera or hand motion features yet. Good of this VIAO outweighs the bad by a mile! No "geek" used for installs, migrations, set-ups, etc. as I was able to solve the few glitches and mistakes myself. VIAO fixed itself a couple times, so apparently that's what VIAO Care does. Even though hard drive isn't Solid State (wanted), it runs quick, quiet and cool. Assist, Web, VIAO buttons are handy. Mobile hotspot had no problems with connections. Touchpad texture, keyboard, all the slots, and wide screen are nice. Picture is harder to view in direct sunlight and outdoors, but not a deal breaker. The wider model would have been nice for viewing, but too heavy and big for travel, and didn't need a numeric key pad. I'm used to this size, and this VIAO is only 5 lb. of substantial (not flimsy) power -- a good desktop replacement. Battery life is amazing. I think this VIAO is an excellent value and expect it to last many years, and was happy to find a laptop with Windows 7 OS.
