History is a set of lies agreed upon. An inconveninent and uncomfortble reminder that what we are taught isn't always the way things really were.
Had never heard about the various connections eluded to in this book until I was reading The Rembrandt Affair by Daniel Silva. I found Silva's background information so intriguing that, in all honesty, I just wanted to learn more. Needless to say, this book goes into great detail about what has largely been an undiscussed, uncomfortable and highly controversial topic. Napoleon was once quoted as saying that "History is a set of lies agreed upon." After reading this book, it's pretty easy to see how both greed, embarrassment and a desire to avoid accountability would have been at the core of a desire to suppress this information. Further proof that those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it.
