Well worth watching,
I recently read the original poem by Longfellow and found that I really liked it. Out of curiosity, I decided to see if there were any live-action movies based on it. Lo and behold, I found references to this 1997 production and a 1950 production starring Vince Edwards that I dimly remember seeing, but I must not have been very impressed because I forgot all about it.
This 1997 version tells as much of the poem as 114 minutes will allow. It focuses on Hiawatha, Minnehaha and Chibiabos and Hiawatha's encounters with his Father Mudjekeewis, the giver of corn Mondamin, and the evil sorcerer Megissongwan as Iagoo relates the legend to the priest Marcel.
The actor's performances are very good all-round although I think David Strathairn was woefully under-used. I particularly liked the interactions between Graham Greene (O Kagh) and Michael Rooker (Bertrand), and Gordon Tootoosis (Iagoo) and Sheila Tousey (Nokomis). Personally, I would liked to have seen Graham Greene as Mudjekeewis but Russell Means does an incredible job also. It's good that the film has a PG rating because Flint Eagle's performance as the crazed Megissongwan is truly frightening.
Direction, cinematography and stagecraft all first class with scenery every bit as good as Last of the Mohicans or Clan of the Cave Bear and an excellent musical score by Reg Powell.
If you like good family entertainment based on classical literature, this is a film for you. So good, I bought a copy for my home library.

Obsessively Complelling Film
2 von 2 finden das hilfreich I am obsessed with this film. I play it over and over; I just can't get enough of the two kids' performances (Chloe Grace Moretz and Kodi Smit-McPhee). So many times that I can tell you that the twenty dollar bill Owen (Kodi) uses to pay for the knife in the beginning of the film has the same serial number as the bill he later pulls from his Mother's wallet - How's that for GEEK?
This is a beautifully crafted film in lighting and score and masterfully directed and, in my mind, superior to the Swedish original "Let the Right One In". Be sure to view it with the director's commentary and see the deleted scenes for a real shocker.
Oh, by the way, if you watch the film enough times you will be able to answer the question: "Can Abby (Chloe Grace) fly?"
