after putting it through its paces for a day or so, i'm very, very happy with this purchase, and the overall experience matched the item. it was accurately described, reasonably priced, securely packed, and very quick to arrive. it's quite an old item, and the video showing it in action boosted my confidence in it and was a major factor in my decision to buy this one as opposed to one of the other listings, so keep that up. thanks a lot, and best of luck to you.

Star Trek: Final Frontier (Diane Carey)
a star trek novel has a high potential geek factor, and many of them bring nothing else to the table except the chance for rabid fans to salivate over seeing kirk, spock, and mccoy doing and saying things they never did or said on film. i've suffered through any number of those, and they never fail to leave a bad taste in my mouth. i've actually put down a few of them unfinished, nearly a cardinal sin for an avid reader. diane carey, however, has written a novel of adventure, intrigue, and intelligence, and it just happens to take place in the star trek universe. in other words, it's a good story first, a good science fiction novel second, and only then concerns itself with being a worthy addition to the star trek universe. because she has her priorities in order, her novel succeeds on all three levels. it helps that we're shown something new - in fact, several somethings. kirk on earth is something we never saw in the series and only momentarily in the movies. kirk at his childhood home?? never. and his scenes, brief though they are, occur in the aftermath of one of the most famous episodes of the original series, illuminating the events of that episode. geek factor mildly (and tastefully) engaged. the main thrust of the novel, of course, is imagining the first starship voyage, years before kirk took the helm of enterprise. we come to know a new crew and a member of kirk's family at the same time. and personally, i enjoyed the fact that the characters, the technology, the situations were a bit grittier than the way roddenberry's vision of the future was usually presented on film. there's a sense of truly pioneering out into the unknown rather than simply pulling onto an interplanetary interstate complete with neatly marked exits and call boxes in case you break down or run into a surly romulan at the rest stop. while the precursors for such things are clearly in place, there's a definite sense that the crew has been thrown totally on its own resources in a hostile environment far from home. no nearby starbase, no rerouting another starship and its crew to help. sink or swim. that's always a great place to start a story of suspense, and while the trappings are most definitely sci-fi, the story could just as easily be set in the middle of the atlantic in the sixteenth century, or the great plains at the beginning of the nineteenth, or any number of other frontiers, because the underlying structure is so basic : travelers in need; an untested crew and ship; an implacable enemy closing in; the need for innovative, cobbled-together solutions. in the hands of a competent writer, this stuff works in any universe. and diane carey is a more than competent writer. if you're a casual trek fan and fan fiction leaves you cold, rest assured that you can close the back cover of this one with a sense of satisfaction. yes, you are going to get a dose of star trek, a good hefty dose, but if the campiness and relentless optimism of the various series never rubbed you the right way, i think you'll find that, while present, it's never overdone, always grounded in solid story elements and situations, and ultimately saves what could otherwise be a very grim, plodding, and heartless novel. this novel will sit on my bookshelf next to another very fine star trek novel, margaret wander bonanno's "strangers from the sky". i'm very glad to have them both together at last.
