This author must have been David Eddings Apprentice
One of a trilogy, this book like the other 2 combines the life in the slums and the splendor of the Magicians Guild Halls with the struggle of a young girl who discovers she has magical ability, but can't control it. Gritty, exciting with well established characters (good and bad) it twists and turns so fast. Her frustrations, her achievements against the traditional power and authority of "The Guild" draws you into a personal relationship with all the characters. This is not a book just for the young. This is Sci-Fi for all ages and should not be read out of sequence with the other two books. This author is going far - David Eddings eat your heart out!
Last Roman: Triumph, The (The Last Roman Trilogy), New, Ludlow, Jack Book

Not as gripping as Parts 1 & 2 in this Trilogy.
I found this a tedious read, with little new in way of battle tactics or strategy. Equally I found the main characters (introduced in the previous book in the trilogy) predictable which made their political and personal thoughts and actions lacking any lustre. The story continued at a slow pace and I was left with my most critical phrase in my mind regarding authors, namely "Why use 2,000 words when a paragraph would do just as well". This third book in the trilogy is worth reading to appreciate the journey of the characters through the trilogy, but just don't expect to rush through it or get the feeling that you just can't put the book down - it won't happen

3rd of a Trilogy. Book 1 was rather a slow starter and dwelt much on establishing the characters
As a Trilogy I enjoyed it very much. However it does need the reader to be patient. This patience is rewarded by a brilliant example of Roman double dealing, duplicity, and the arrogance of the ruling class over the plebs. The conviction that they are never wrong coupled with their complete disregard for the countless Legionary lives thrown way by the self opinionated wealth and power grabbing Senators. The Intrigues and masterful, the characters clearly visible in the readers minds. The Military exploits on land and sea and the tactics informative and educational. All together a brilliant insight into Rome and those who ran it and those who died for it.
