Pilot Rescues in China during WWII-The Back Story
The Air Ground Aid Section was a covert U.S. Army pilot rescue program during WWII. As part of the MIS-X program to help downed pilots escape or evade the enemy, the AGAS was established by Wichtrich at the home of the 14th Army Air Force in Kunming, China. The innocuous program name was deflected attention from their role to establish 'ratlines' (similar to the 'underground railways') to bring pilots back from China, Burma, and French-Indochina. The officers assigned to the agency wore branch insignia from other branches. Nearly 900 pilots and airmen were rescued in thanks to the AGAS. This book provides excellent background information to the establishment of the agency and some of its key officers. Gen. Claire Chennault and Ho Chi Minh's roles are covered, too. The politics of war in this theater are explained (Vichy French, Free French, Communist Chinese, Japanese, etc) as a backdrop to the intrigue created by the interest of different groups and the inherent difficulties arising from working across a large demographic area. It is light on specific rescue tales but there are enough included to highlight the efforts of the AGAS. It is a small book and so is a quick and interesting read.

Best In Show? Best in Comedy!
Aren't dogs just a reflection of ourselves? "Best In Show" subtlety and not-so-subtlety reminds us dog lovers of the lengths we'll go to have "best in show" pets. Meanwhile, we humans struggle with all the usual human conditions and afflictions that make us "human."
