Good JavaFX Tutorial

I bought this book to go along with a first course in Java programming. I wanted to use JavaFX instead of Swing for the assignments. The book is very easy to follow, even if you are not an expert Java programmer. I was able to do all the course assignments in JavaFX and write a complicated charting program with it as well. The book does not try to be comprehensive, for example there is only a short section on 3d graphics. However, it does a great job at the introductory level.

Authoritative.

The section on drying prints with blotters is, by itself, worth the price of admission. Many tips and complete guidance for producing bw prints of the highest technical quality. Especially useful for those who want to print on fiber paper. Vestal was an acclaimed street photographer in the day but there is little here on composition. It is all about technique in the darkroom. I find it to be more accessible than A. Adams' darkroom book.

C Programming for UNIX by John J. Valley

Comprehensive Introduction to C on UNIX Platforms

This is a good companion book to Advanced Programming in the UNIX® Environment (APUE). APUE goes much deeper into POSIX specific commands. And it assumes the material in Valley's book. C Programming for UNIX provides a necessary foundation. I especially found helpful the discussion on array pointers and looping, the vi editor, global variables, make files, debugging by command line. It is all here in detail and the author makes few assumptions. It is easy and enjoyable to read. If you want to try old school command line programming on Linux then this book is the place to start. Docking one star because the title is deceptive, the book is only introductory in nature.
