Fujifilm XQ1 Digital Camera (Silver) (16410594)

The Best Compact At This Price
So lets get this out of the way, yes the Sony RX100 is a better overall compact, enthusiast camera, I'm not putting the XQ1 above it. The RX100 however is about $250 more than the XQ1 so in the sub $250 price range, this is the best compact enthusiast camera out there. The image quality is fantastic, the power-on and shutter response time are lightning quick. You have the RAW file format available as well as the ability to control exposure manually. The control ring is nice and fluid with just enough stiffness that you won't adjust it without meaning to do so. Shooting monochrome with this camera is a wonderful experience. Whatever algorithm Fuji uses to process monochrome leaves rich tones when you've got your exposure right. On the down side the zoom is a little short at 100mm and the battery life is a little short. So why does it still get four stars from me? It's a compact camera, I don't need the reach from a camera like this, I use it more for street/documentary style shooting. If I need length, I'll want something I can shoot wide open at high shutter speeds and opt for a DSLR. I don't think the focal length limits the ability of this camera. As for the battery life, I typically carry a spare or two for any camera I walk around with and spares for this camera are readily available for little money. The only other knock (and it's really not a knock at this price) is the drop off in Aperture as you zoom; it's pretty quick. While you have 1.8, it's only wide open at the widest focal length a quickly jumps to 4.9. I'm ok with those trade-offs at this price. I would say if you had $450-$500 to spend, grab the Sony as it is everything this Fuji is plus it doesn't have the short comings listed here with the Fuji. However if this is the top of your budget, don't overthink it; you'll make beautiful photos with this camera.

Biggest Bang For The Buck Lens You'll Find
I tried real hard to find a reason to not give a 5 star rating to such a low dollar lens but in the end I couldn't. Most people will pay between $100 and $130 for this lens. Don't think twice if you're at the higher end. You're still getting a deal. The 50mm lens on the DX bodies gives you a 35mm equivilent of 75mm. This is a good length for portraits. Combine that with the fixed focal length and wide f/1.8 max aperture and you have a great little portrait lens at an unbelievable price. Wide open at f/1.8 you may see just a little softness in some images. For me this only happens in lower light. At f/2.8 it's tack sharp. The fixed focal length results, as it should, in good crisp images. Good bokeh, not as creamy as some of Nikon's higher level lenses but again, THE PRICE! The size of this lens makes it great for a walk around lens and adds almost no weight to your bag as a 2nd or 3rd lens. On the down side, the lens feels very cheap. The movement of the aperture ring really shouts cheap (more on that in a second). The focus is just a touch slow on my D90. As stated above this lens has an aperture ring. The ring needs to be locked in as f/22 for your body to control the aperture setting. When putting the lens on or taking it off you may bump the lock and change the setting resulting in an error message from your camera. No big deal, more of a heads up. Overall, for the price, you will not be disappointed. This may be your sharpest lens if you're not invested in some higher end glass. If you're thinking about buying just do it. You'll like it.

Have Owned Mine For 7 Months
This is an outstanding point and shoot camera. Takes very good snapshots. Screen is easy to see. Camera has a nice durable feel, I havnt dropped it yet but feels like it would survive one or two. I was not expecting the quality of pics this takes. For a compact point and shoot camera you will not be disappointed.
