My favourite Maigret novel - so far!
So far, I've read nine of the Inspector Maigret novels and I reckon that this one is my favourite. It's one of the earliest that was written and is the first to include Mme Maigret in a quite prominent role. Simenon is excellent at conveying the atmosphere of a scene or location and this book is no exception. I would highly recommend it.

Would recommend
I would recommend this. Ariadne Oliver and Miss Lemon are both featured (prior to making their appearance in any of the whodunits that are solved by Hercule Poirot). These short stories, however, are quite different - but not totally so - from what one might expect. Nevertheless, they're very readable.

Readable but not Agatha Christie's best work
The short stories that make up this book are not whodunits but instead they have a supernatural theme. This is therefore not what one would normally expect from Agatha Christie. It's not her best work but the tales are all quite readable and a few of them are very good ('Witness for the Prosecution' being a notable example).
