Battery maintenance made easy
Having used a Datatool smart charger for my Honda motorcycle for the past 12 years, I recently bought a BMW R1200RS and the handbook advises to use a CANBUS compatible charger.
The Oxford Optimiser is much cheaper than BMW’s own charger and the included connector fits the OEM accessory socket on the bike perfectly. No need to fiddle about with a hard-wire kit and finding somewhere to hide the connector under the seat like my old charger - plug and play simplicity.
The charger has a confusingly extensive array of functions which are indicated by various combinations of LEDs - I’m sure this could be made far more intuitive - but it doesn’t matter unless it indicates an issue (in which case you will probably have to refer to the manual!) as it automatically tests, recovers, charges and maintains the battery without any intervention other than plugging it in.
Using the integrated mountIng points I’ve attached mine to the garage wall next to where I park the bike and simply plug it into the bike and switch it on as soon as I put the bike away so the battery is always in perfect condition - even if it’s been a few weeks between rides.
Whilst it cost more than my old smart charger, it works seamlessly with the BMW’s complex electronics and existing accessory socket - battery maintenance made easy!
