An Escort of P38s by John D. Mullins
This review is nostalgic for me. When I was a teenager I learned that my next door neighbor flew with the 94th Fighter Squadron of the 1st Fighter Wing. For me this is not just an outstanding book about people I have always admired but never knew. A man that I knew and admired flew with this outfit so the book is especially significant to me. These fliers flew many dangerous missions to places like the heavily defended Ploesti oil fields in Romania. I remember my neighbor telling me about one mission where 16 P38s went on the strike and only 4 returned. Aside from the personal aspect, it is a great book about a great group of men and I am extremely happy to have come across it quite by accident in a random search on ebay. A friend of mine is an aviation expert, in particular about P38s, and he has the book in his collection. He would not own the book if it was not worth having.
