Strong period detail and historical sources. Human traits under the microscope too and some exciting action, but this is never the main focus with him
Informative and involving but perhaps not pacy enough for all readers.

Waning eye for detail, perhaps. Sad.
Writer was in his last months of life and in new surroundings. Either might explain the relatively swift and sketchy retelling in the few pages given over to the historical battles.
