The Last Duel [18] DVD

Underrated, yet lacking 'centre'.

Ridley Scott's latest drama in the realm of the medieval is certainly worth a watch. The sword fights alone tell you just how fantastical the current spate of heroine obsessed warrior fantasies actually are - just a few blows of these weapons would knock most men down! The performances are just as solid, making the movie a good addition to Scott's work, yet I felt that it still lacked something, probably because of the manner the key story is told from various perspectives, so it becomes a little puzzling to navigate in a few scenes and therefore left somewhat untroubled as it reached its conclusion. Some exquisite sets and action moments, as well as some poignant moments amidst the key roles.

Well worth a watch.

Classic films are often ripe for "re-vamping" into something less watchable than the original, but that isn't the case here. Whilst taking some of the key themes from the 1960 Western and re-rendering qualities of some of the original characters (Brynner, Mc Queen, Coburn and Vaughn especially), this re-sets the action in a more recognisable format and allows its own cast to shine in that context. Good performances are provided by all, but Washington, Pratt and Hawke stand out in this glossy and gritty venture of searching for justice.
