A Good, but Slightly Flawed Account About the Pacfic War
If you a beginner and are looking for a "quick and dirty" review of the War in the Pacific, then this is a good book with which to start. It covers military and political actions by the United States, Japan, Britain, Netherlands, Australia, China, and even a smattering of the Soviet Union, Germany, and India. There were two defects that bothered me about this book, however. One is a favorite "gripe" of mine; the maps at the rear of the book are small and don't show the location of many of the cities mentioned in the text. The second "gripe" are the factual inaccuracies and grammatical errors throughout the book, something that a good, knowledgeable editor should have caught and corrected.

An Aviation Steal at $40
This "product" that I purchased for $40 was actually three books, with back cover prices amounting to a total of $124.05! So, either somebody took a bath on this, or there is a considerable markup in aviation books in the stores. I really wanted only "Experimental & Prototype U.S. Air Force Jet Fighters" by Dennis R. Jenkins and Tony R. Landis; so, the other two were bonuses to me. The Jenkins/Landis book was a valuable addition to my extensive home library of Air Force aircraft books. It was loaded with photographs, many of which I had never seen before and I've seen a lot of aviation photographs in my 70 years. I highly recommend this book--especially at the price I bought it. "U.S. Experimental & Prototype Aircraft Projects--Fighters 1939-1945" by Bill Norton could be considered a companion volume to the Jenkins/Landis book above. There is a slight overlap between the two with the early jets, but otherwise it too is wonderfully illustrated and has boxes that contain information and characteristics of each model described. The third book, "Radical Wings & Wind Tunnels--Advanced Concepts Tested at NASA Langley" by Joseph R. Chambers & Mark A. Chambers, was a "throw-in" extra in which I was not really interested. Not as profusely illustrated as the other two books, it did contain some points of interest on obscure aircraft and concepts that were tested at NASA Langley. This is not a comprehensive aircraft data book, so it may interest only those who like wind tunnels and "gee-whiz" aircraft, many of which never came to fruition. All in all this was $40 well-spent for me.

The Salvage Operations After Pearl Harbor
If you want a detailed explanation of the attack on Pearl Harbor, then this book is NOT for you.
If, however, you want a detailed description of the damage to the ships and how they were raised and repaired, then this IS your book!
Admiral Wallin was in charge of the salvage proceedings and documents the challenges he faced in bringing EVERY ship back into service except USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, and USS Utah.
The only down side to this publication is that it is a reprint by the University Press of the Pacific and they did a poor job of scanning the photos and maps in the original publication. Consequently, the illustrations are blurry and have annoying scan lines and patterns in them. Fortunately, the words, come through clearly.
