Classic Italian Flick
Franco Zeffirelli weaves a beautiful story, using his emphasis on closeups of eyes to convey meaning. This is a fictionalized account of the transformation of Francis of Assisi after his return from war, yet an enchanting story even so. The scenery is wonderful, the father is very funny in his frustration, the Bishop is obsequious, and the dissolute friends of Francis see the error of their ways.
With songs by Donovan, this leans very closely to being a "Flower Child" movie. Francis had an emphasis on vows of poverty, and there are scenes of the poor people of Assisi flocking to the rebuilt church in the meadow, and the love of God being demonstrated through the lepers being bathed and fed, Zeffirelli creates the time and place in a realistic manner, even if there is a bit of sap included.
It is sad that the main characters who portrayed Clare and Francis were not given parts in other major productions.
