And what a mind it is
Reading about the author through his essays is compelling alone. What a career! Only a very curious mind travels through so many areas at such depth.
Perhaps the one thing that stuck with me most was Bateson's sense that he had never really helped a alcoholic recover. He wonders whether it was the sober patient's insanity that caused them to drink in order to recover, at least a little, both sanity and acceptance from others.
It is not an easy book but quite worthwhile. A friend asked me why I started reading Bateson here and not in other more approachable works. I admitted it was just by chance.

This is the best thing I ever read with regard to how to organize a company!

Indispensable for any business architect
Reading this book gives you 40 years of disciplined diligent effort in constructing and reforming companies to be functional. What a bargain!
In business, the top manager's rightful pride in what he or she has created is limited by the employees appreciation of their company. While the material in this book may not be sufficient alone to build a great company, it is a necessary component. One can discover it alone someday or read this book. Either way will work.
Hat's off to Elliott Jaques. May he rest in peace, knowing that his life's work was very fine indeed.
