A tintype of the times...
The Miracle Mongers by Harry Houdini is an enjoyable glimpse into the long-lost era of magicians; sword-swallowers, poison takers, and coal eaters. Personally, I must admit, I was expecting a play-by-play how-to on these seemingly impossible feats. Houdini does what he promises- shatters our illusions and makes these heroes seem more human.
One way in which he does this is to compare their repertoires with those of others in times past. When the reader sees the similarities in the acts underaken, he cannot help but wonder why the miracle was repeated so exactly one hundred years or more later. As for duplicating these tricks today, well, all you have to do is go to the corner druggist pick up such a mundane item as, for instance, mercury, or perhaps aconite.
(I did learn that anyone may lick a red-hot knife without injury or prior preparation. This I have not yet attempted.)
If you were are hoping to replicate the wonders of Houdini, and his contemporaries, you would do well to purchase, along with this book, a lexicon of the well-known remedies of the time and their modern-day equivalents, and to get in touch with a chemist with loose morals.
Otherwise, a charming read, and a must-have for enthusiasts of the antiquated magic show.

No more underwires!
These have replaced painful support bras-no more being poked and chafed by wires! Everyone-ladies, men, and everyone in between, should own at least one of these for a great sense of freedom of movement. I happily threw away all my bras and I wear GC2 shirts exclusively.
I also bought the short tank-style binder, but I prefer the full coverage shirt. I even swim in it! Underneath my 1910 bathing costume, with a pair of black shorts with white trim-a great retro look for the beach or pool! Thanks!!!
