Expanded 2nd album from the Verve with great extra tracks on 3 cd's.

The Verve's 2nd album is almost as unhinged as its first, with the big swirls and squalls of Nick McCabe's guitars just about anchored by the rhythm section. It begins ferociously with A New Decade and This is Music then tempers itself with On Your Own. Its second half is more beatific, the highlight being History with lyrics borrowed from William Blake mixed with druggy recriminations. The whole effect is stunning.

Epic, fascinating but overwhelmingly tragic. It is essential viewing.

This 26 episode documentary remains the definitive TV history of the Second World War. A warning though: I first saw this at 9 years of age: that was too young. It is too harrowing for children, particularly the Holocaust episode, but many other scenes. So, for teenagers and above only. The narration is sober, Olivier is undramatic. Carl Davis's music is poignant. But what matters most of all are the hundreds of interviewees recounting their small parts in such a massive tragedy. This Box Set includes a lot of bonus material narrated by Eric Porter. You will find that some of the weight of the war sticks with you for life. But you cannot understand WWII without watching this: all of it.
