no on Orf, yes on Loeffler
quality recording of definitive vintage performances of Orf's noxious, Nazi-era (premiere, Frankfurt 1937) concatanation of central European bellowing and grunting....and French-American composer Loeffler's gorgeous, powerful Pagan Poem, a sort of half symphony/half piano concerto that bears some slight resemblence to d'Indy's equally fine Symphony on a French Mountain Air. I bought it, of course, to get a good CD of Stokowski's late-1950's oroginal vinyl/stereo Capitol records pressing of the Loeffler, and was not disappointed. Though Loeffler remains relatively unknown and composed only sporadicly, most of his two-dozen or so works are of high quality and at least 4 - this, his equally magnificent symphonic poem La Mort de Tintagilles, plus a string quartet ("Music for 4 Stringed Instruments") and an Octet for strings and woodwinds - are categorical masterpieces.
