Aural Bliss
As the owner of this amp's previous incarnation, the Yamaha DSP A-3090, I didn't have to delve into the manual too much to get it up and running. It even works with the 3090's remote!
At 23kgs, it's 2kg heavier than it's predecessor, and the front channels are rated at 100wrms.
The main, and most important to me, difference is the provision of banana plug sockets in the binding posts. I used to have terrible trouble with the 3090 in trying to connect heavy gauge speaker cable to the binding posts.
It is a tad "old fashioned." However, don't be fooled into thinking that this twenty year old design should be rejected. The sound quality is superb, and the DSP (digital soundfield processing) modes are really useful.
The only downside is that I can't get anything but 2 channel PCM when connected to my blu-ray player, but that's not an insurmountable problem. The amp has six external decoder inputs, so hooking up an external processor or decoder are catered for.
Since obtaining this amp I have dug out my old laserdisc player and discs (still surprisingly good!), with the added bonus that is processes DTS encoded discs. Also, I'm going to try and sort out my old amp and get that up and running in my "man cave."
It may not have all the "bells and whistles" of a modern amp, but the quality of the sound, made possible by the size and weight of the power transformers, makes the DSP A-1 an amp worth bidding for.
These things cost nearly two grand twenty years ago!
