ho-hum
Author chose rather mundane houses, and the photos of the exteriors show very little. Why are these houses and their contents special? Also do not like the familiarity of the author in referring to the owners by their first names. But for the price, satisfied.
I have heard the author speak live, and he is great. And his power point presentation outstanding. A dedicated preservationist. But this book does not hit the mark.

hit and miss
Some interesting perspectives--- not sure that I agree with them all, but stimulating
Most illustrations are in black and white--- not good for a paintings book
Old cultural bias in favor of/overloaded emphasis on Copley and Boston. Disparaging attitude toward John Hesselius and Robert Feke. Only minor discussion on several important Virginia and Maryland artists. The Colonial Williamsburg book on Southern Artists is a much better book.
