Bowater: The Whirlwind Years. 263 & 137 Squadrons.
This is a must for the Whirlwind fraternity and other aviation enthusiasts who want to know more about this remarkable aircraft. There is a huge amount of material covering pilots, missions, airfields and organisation during the frantic early years of the war. Also what Graham Warner did for the Blenheim Robert Bowater achieves in high measure here: in the same way that a 'cello might be set against a piano, in these difficult years the energetic and keen youth of the RAF is set against an unusual and in some ways demanding machine. There were operational costs of this adventurous design such as the radiator in the wing, the weakness of the retractable tailwheel and so on but I marveled at reading how a Whirlwind out climbed an Me109 and knocked pieces off FW190s. It is a great pity that the Whirlwind wasn't ready for the Battle of Britain and with its four cannon couldn't make a contribution. Purchasers of this volume may wish to know that the Whirlwind Fighter Group is attempting to build a non-flying replica of the Whirlwind.

Good. Found easier to remove old bush and fit this new one was to drive them via the metal tube in the middle (using sockets in a vice).

Oil absolutely everywhere
This syringe leaked on the upstroke and the downstroke and all hopes of once achieving this operation without a mess vanished in seconds. I've tightened up the internal nut in the hope that it will spread the rubber seal a little more but the mess was so devastating in the workshop that I haven't tried it since. This is the second make I have tried to make axle and gearbox oil changes easier; the first one from Machine Mart was better but also given up because of leaks. If you want to try a syringe I suggest you avoid these two makes.
