Vintage Contax Flash Does the Job

I bought a Contax TLA 280 flash to use with a 1973-vintage Contax RTS 35mm SLR camera I purchased on eBay. These items were made in Japan just after Zeiss transfered the Contax brand to Yashica / Kyocera. This flash works perfectly, offering generous amounts of light, the ability to adjust light spread to the prime lens in use (28, 35, 50, 135 mm), and aim the light direction upwards in increments up to 90o. Battery use and recharge time are moderate. The first generation Contax / Yashica SLR, the RTS, does not have through-the-lens adjustment, so this flash is used in its "full" automatic mode by setting camera aperture appropriately for the distance from the subject. I have also used it on a slightly later Contax, the 139q, with TLA and it works well. This flash probably won't replace current major brand flash guns for use with digital SLR's (more sophisticated TLA, off-camera triggering, etc.), but could be used for simple DSLR photography or to trigger off camera flash. It is an excellent item, still working, at a very good price.
