I broke one into two peices separated by 18 mm to detect a spinning toy motor weight and by using a 8200 ohm collector resistor (that's all I had) and a 220 ohm LED resistor I got an almost perfect square wave (three corners square and one corner angled off, if I recall correctly.).

Great for checking continuity in automotive wires.
I tried it on a faulty power cord and then it started conducting again so I'll have to get back to it. Then I tried the green one on my car's faulty fuse panel. It worked so much easier than trying to push a bare needle into the wires. The back plastic sleeve extended too far in back of the conductor so I had to hacksaw it off before I could put my alligator clip on it.
