Manufacturing defect on disc 3 and replacements are hard to find
I'm a California native and I have a couple of cousins who are MASSIVE Beach Boys fans who live near Hawthorne so I grew up hearing The Beach Boys. A few years ago, I ended up moving to Washington State and I've been missing listening to them. I decided to pick up a sealed copy of this box set.
What I didn't know is that apparently all the early pressings at least, have a manufacturing error on disc 3 which adds two seconds of silence to the beginning of all the songs and cuts off Surf's Up early on the fade out. This problem has come up on a couple of different forums and is even referenced in reviews on Amazon. Capitol Records originally even offered replacement discs but those are long gone now. There are still what seems to be a large number of sealed copies out there that include the error disc 3.

Good for it's time but...
This was a great little hits collection when it was first released in November 1979. It covers 1973 through 1977 and runs about 45 minutes. In 2005, Jeff Lynne pretty much updated this collection with All Over the World: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra, has better sound quality and is around an hour and nineteen minutes. It does omit Can't Get It Out of My Head but does include songs from later albums and it currently goes for what ELO's Greatest Hits goes for when you look around. In 2007, Jeff Lynne put out Ticket to the Moon: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra Volume 2 which picks up where All Over the World left off and it does include Can't Get It Out of My Head. If you can afford roughly $20.00, I'd just recommend buying both of those. Better sound quality and 40 songs as opposed to 11.

A pretty good career retrospective
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich This is actually a pretty decent collection and it draws across pretty much the band's releases on different labels (Epic, ABC/MCA, Atlantic, RCA and the band's own Drifter's Church). It was released in time for the band's 50th anniversary last year. The discs are somewhat chronological although they do mix it up here and there a bit. There are a few songs that I would've swapped out for other songs that didn't make the cut. For example, I would've switched The Nature of Love for something like Where It All Began, What Do People Know? or Follow Your Dreams.
On the plus side, the discs are all pretty well packed with music. The last eight songs on disc three given to outside projects by people who have been in Poco. I personally would've preferred it to have all been given to Poco which would've allowed more songs like Drivin' Wheel, Crazy Eyes, Whatever Happened to Your Smile?, Western Waterloo, One Horse Blue, What If I Should Say I Love You? Lullaby in September and so on.
