Well researched, enlightening, and very entertaining
I have read other Bryson books this is about my third of fourth. He really does his research, and more importantly presents it in an interesting and entertaining way. I found this book especially enjoyable.
I also recommend his books The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid, A Short History of Nearly Everything, and A Walk in the woods.
I look forward to reading anything by him now, he just clicks with me.

Vital Dust : Life as a Cosmic Imperative. Christian Duve
An older book but still contemporary, well researched, and well written. Must have been an Epic project for the author. A decent philosophical biological foundation, without reading like a textbook, and getting overly academic and hung up by terminology and minutiae that would only be needed by biology majors, and pre-med students. This is not a textbook. It is more in the philosophical realm of ideas about what life means to human psychology.
