The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper
21. Feb 2019
America's inspiration for Thomas the Tank Engine?
This 2005 retelling of a story first published in 1930 is not what I remembered from my 1950's childhood. I recall either from a 1950 Little Golden Book or a Disney animated cartoon, that the Little Engine was pulling a circus train that had to get to the town on the other side of the mountain for the next day's performance. This 21st Century version has the train taking toys and good food to boys and girls along the line. Regardless of the storyline, I bought the book primarily for the illustrations of the steam locomotive. I am organizing a train of swayback HO scale freight cars for operation during this summer's local county fair, and want an American version of Thomas the Tank Engine (British) to pull the train. Unfortunately, The Little Engine that Could is shown in this 2005 book with a 4-2-0 wheel arrangement, something unknown in America beyond the 1840's, and probably not powerful enough to pull six to eight model cars.

Worth watching only once.
The movie has an interesting ending, but a long and talkative build-up to the conclusion. A movie with a lot of talking heads and little action, with really only two sets (the restaurant interior and a disabled car on a lonely roadside) for the entire 90 minutes. Not a movie that I would want to watch twice.
Slow Trains Down South.Deep in Dixie Volume II: 2 by Ferrell, Mallory Book The
30. Jan 2019
Dixie moved at a slower pace than Northern and Western states, as so did its trains.
Slow Trains Down South, Volume II, visits short line railroads in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and East Texas. (Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee were covered in Volume I.) Photographs in the 225-page volume are 95% steam locomotives, mostly taken from the late 1940's into the early 1960's. All photos are black and white, accompanied by some excellent pen and ink sketches. Views include both locomotive roster shots as well as trains in motion.
