Accidental Ambassador: Gordo
Book is a historical work about cartoonist Gus Arriola. Those familiar with Arriola's comic strip, Gordo, are most likely in their late 50's plus. The book focuses on Arriola's life history and is full of samples of his work. Even though he was born in CA, he had family roots in Mexico and introduced Americans to many Mexican customs. In one strip, Arriola had his main character, Gordo, tell fans that they could get his bean and cheese recipe by sending a self-addressed/stamped envelope. Some 85,000 fans responded! I am very familiar with the history of cartooning and comic strips in the US, how Arriola is hardly mentioned in the annals of cartooning is a big mystery. Great book and wonderful images of his work!
