A dreadful live bootleg
Ragged vocal ensembles, choral passages excised altogether, an orchestra so muffled it sounds like it has 10 members. The liner note relates the comic tale of how Sir Thomas Beecham kept missing the rehearsals and finally the performances, with Robert Lawrence stepping into the breach. The results were disastrous and never should have been released. The fact that the orchestra refuses to have its name attached to this mess and isn’t credited anywhere on the packaging should be an additional hint as to how awful this is.

Definitely a mixed bag
When Stanley Dance undertook in early 1958 to fulfill a commission from British label Felsted to record a series of albums by swing-era veterans (he called their music "mainstream jazz" to distinguish it from the New Orleans Trad Jazz fad that had recently swept Britain and more current post-bop "modern jazz"), the results were predictably mixed. After all, you can't force greatness in hothouse conditions. Collected here in one rather cheaply packaged box set (all two-color printing and cardboard sleeves), the results range from the sublime (Coleman Hawkins' High and Mighty Hawk) to the mundane (a wretched L side from Earl Hines) to nice moments here and there in between (I really like the casual brilliance of the Billy Strayhorn-Johnny Hodges set). There are cool individual tracks by Buddy Tate, Dicky Wells and others, but the aggregate impact of this material as a box set is that of pleasant but inessential music. Recommend exploring this material on your own and then picking up the good bits on individual albums, starting with the Hawkins disc, which has to be counted among the monuments of his late-period career. On the strength of its inclusion alone, this box earns an extra star.
