Exotic beauty in a scale wheel
The Xtra Speed aluminium wheels (rims) for 1/14 rig adds a nice realistic touch. Adding beauty and durability to any 1/14 truck, tractor head or trailer.
The wheels give a true-to-life look and feel that surpasses that of the stock plastic chrome plated wheels. The stock wheels look unreal with the highly reflective finish which fades with age, revealing the translucent white plastic substrate. I would also presume that the rigs would be able to carry heavier loads with the aluminum wheels than with the plastics.
The 20-spoke Xtra Speed wheels give a bold but fancy look. The 10-spoke version appears closer to the life-size wheels normally seen on full scale rigs; but the 20-spoke adds some exotic beauty, maybe what a die-heart full-scale trucker would add in order to stand out from the crowd.
The wheels come with a black inner cylinder that replicates the massive brake drums of the real thing. The wheels bolt onto the drum with small hex screws, which can be replaced with scale wheel lugs to further add to the realism.
The 4mm lock nut is housed in a recessed section of the brake cylinder and covered by a real nice hub cap that looks cool.
It would be good if the wheels were supplied with a tool to remove/install the hub cap. But, guess what? I have found that a modified 10mm multi-point (12 point) socket is the ideal tool. The socket is modified by grinding down 2 or 3 of the ridges with a rotary tool (e.g. Dremel) fitted with a coarse sanding drum. Walla, the socket is now a perfect fit and can be turned by hand to remove/install the hub cap.
