A favorite cookbook
My husband and I received a copy of this cookbook as a wedding present four decades ago. It is worn and stained from use. Obviously there are good reasons for the wear and tear! In addition to the recipes themselves, I enjoy the tips and the other comments from Farm Journal subscribers that appear at the top of each page. This copy is a gift for my daughter and my son-in-law.

No Gumdrops Here
This is the harrowing tale of two Jewish children who are dropped off in a remote part of Poland during World War II, with the hope of the abandonment saving their lives. They are taken in by a “witch” at great risk to herself and the community. This region is controlled by the Germans, but, after a failed German invasion of Russia, the Russians and other Resistance fighters are encroaching upon this part of eastern Poland, threatening the Germans and making the Germans even harsher toward the inhabitants of the area. This is not an easy read, but the story is not without hope.

Matthew Mead’s Holiday Decor
I have enjoyed Matthew Mead’s work since the early days of “country decor” in shelter magazines. His creativity is a pleasure to witness, and the holiday scenes are beautifully photographed in this magazine/book.
