A pretty well-rounded and contextualized read
Pros :
- Gott provides sourced data for the majority of claims he makes.
- He presents many lines of what corporate journalists in the U.S. and the U.S. government have been pushing on us since we were kids, then he provides a lot of national and international context for those different developments in Cuban society to give a much more well-rounded perspective.
Cons:
- He doesn't go into almost any of the many attempts made by people to assassinate Castro
- He doesn't go into much at all about the U.S.'s involvement in the building and spread of the Cuban mafia

Contains some real visceral descriptions of poor and working people's struggles.

Too much about opportunist individuals but also describes much about the NLF too.
Pros:
- In line citations for many important data points.
- Over 100 pages contain content on a combination of how the NLF organized, the Tet offensive, material conditions of poor and working people outside and inside Saigon, and the transition from U.S. ground forces against Vietnamese workers to bombing/napalm/machine gun raids via U.S. air force,
- Includes bibliography to reinforce FitzGerald's claims.
Cons:
- Too much time spent describing the opportunism and infighting of individuals within the Saigon bureaucracy
