All time favorite
This movie has everything, great story line, is perfectly cast and the writing was amazing. Not a routine Navy recruiting type movie,in fact the Navy refused to support it,or allow filming on any active bases. Still, the Navy experience was very true to life, this coming from a career aircrewman. The real story is more about the growth of a hard-luck, broken human being who joins the military in a desperate attempt to make his life better. This was Richard Gere's best role ever and everyone fell in love with Debra Winger and Louis Gossett Jr. as well as a very well picked supporting cast. I would not classify this movie as love story but love does prevail. I dare you not to shed a tear at movies end. My of my all time favorites, it's a classic and there's really nothing else to compare it to. By the way, the soundtrack and special features are great as well.
