Fine old mystery
Eric Ambler was a master of the wonderfully detailed mystery, and this is perhaps his most famous work. He specialized in telling the tale of what happens when an ordinary fellow finds himself surrounded by extraordinarily malicious criminals. In this case, we have a fairly simple mystery writer pulled through the course of events into the life and career of a real scoundrel, the Dimitrios of the title. We see murder, espionage (of the Balkan sort), thievery on a grand scale, and a list of subsidiary characters who are so bad that they're hard to believe. And yet we do believe them. Sidney Greenstreen and Peter Lorre made a film about this story called the "Mask of Dimitrios," and for those who remember the movie, this book will certainly bring back some pleasant smiles about unpleasant people. Read it and get swept back to Istanbul in the early part of the 20th century--it's well worth your time.
