A Bitter Sweet Life = an Awesome NOVA release!
If you are reading this Blu-ray review I would imagine you've already seen this film. This movie is a lot of fun, fantastic acting and pacing. Lee Byung-hun is just awesome in that dope black suit. Movies during this era were so good. Pure entertainment. The Blu-ray of this movie is great. The picture quality has a very film like look with a tiny bit of dot crawl considering the films age. The audio is fantastic as well, but that depends really on how good your sound system is.
I played this on a region A player which of course worked fine. The NOVA release comes with an absolutely beautiful slip cover. The case itself has a beautiful insert and stamp on the Blu-ray. As a collector I appreciate the level of care and detail in the whole package. These movies are becoming more rare, I highly doubt we will see another pressing of the Blu-ray. Is the NOVA HERO Blu-ray Director's Cut worth it?
Do you need the Director's cut version of HERO? If you loved the regular version and wanted more then you would probably enjoy this version. Things to note:
The US release has better picture quality and color timing then this version. The version the picture quality is sort of questionable, there is a ton of dot crawl and the color timing is way blown out it. Just too vivid, imagine turning up the contrast and color on your TV a little too high. 6.5/10
The extra scenes are interesting enough though sometimes the color timing does match the rest of the movie slightly.
The sound:
The soundtrack for this is 10/10 and actually the main reason I bought this. The original Mandarin language track is DTS and is just pure pleasure to listen to.
As always the NOVA packages are quite beautiful though I don't really like that they over filtered Jet Li's face. You can barely recognize that it's him.
Overall I still did enjoy this Blu-ray despite it's glaring flaws and am glad to have it in my collection.
