1 von 1 finden das hilfreich Most deaths in house fires is due to smoke inhalation not actual burns, definitely worth the investment to protect your family in a worst case scenario. The VRU will replace a bulky North/Honeywell escape respirator kit due to the concentrated O2 and Lithium Hydroxide CO2 scrubber concept.
What is interesting is the passive design for the CO2 scrubber in this VRU. Unlike the other devices which use a metal canister for the Lithium hydroxide scrubber and it would require the exhaled air to passes over the crystals via a tube, this unit actually encapsulate the LIOH within the fabric so there is no risk of accidentally ingesting the scrubber. In other designs if the scrubber canister filter fails or over years the crystals compact inside the canister you end up with an issue.
Since the LiOh is part of the fabric mesh (White fabric stuck inside with velcro surrounding the the neck, you have no risk of compaction over the years. This is why EBA devices typically have a 10 year shelf life, due to a study done by the Navy regarding natural compaction of the crystals. This is not an issue with the VRU. Technically the shelf life should be indefinite as long as moisture does not get inside the unit (this would be indicated by the humidity detector on the VRU, Blue = good, Pink = bad)
An idea possible with this VRU is building a plexglass box for my small dog technically if you put your dog in the box, pop in one of these VRU units then close the door, the dog would also be able to take advantage of the VRU unit due to the passive scrubber design.
I tested it and it works, the sound of the O2 filling the hood and the pads warming up as it removes the CO2. The neck seal is very tight so no chance of smoke going in. I did a moderate workload for 10 minutes and no issues with CO2 or hypoxia etc.. it definitely still works as spec.
Now when wearing it, the pads do get warm but this is due to the LIOH scrubbing out the CO2 that you exhale and capturing it within the pad. This is normal and means it is operating correctly.

Most comfortable work setup, protecting from covid.
