Excellent Book - How to Think When Evaluating Chess Positions
Clearly, success in chess demands a basic knowledge of the game and a certain amount of tactical vision. Such things are fed to chess players all the time by most chess books one will see. However, comparatively few books focus on the thought processes one should employ when playing. Heisman's work, while not alone in filling this void, fills it better than most. Where another book will tell you that a certain move is correct while another incorrect, Heisman spends his time showing you why a player made the incorrect move due to an error in his thought process. Heisman's hope, and I think it is a realistic one, is that players who see the nature of these thought process errors will avoid not only the specific mistakes he features in his examples, but will also learn to avoid similar mistakes in positions they have not yet seen. I am a USCF expert and nevertheless found quite a bit I can take from Heisman's book to reinforce my game. I definitely recommend it.
