A great live Dylan recording
This is a live recording of a concert I attended 40 years ago, the final date of Dylan's European tour, apparently recorded for Irish radio on the day but only just released as a double CD. 160 minutes of music, Dylan went through the songbook, was on top form and clearly enjoying himself. The concert was in the open air at Slane Castle, on the banks of the River Boyne near Drogheda before a crowd of about 80,000. Sound quality is excellent, Bob's band included former Rolling Stone Mick Taylor on guitar, superb throughout, and Ian McLagan (Faces, Stones) on keyboards (great in Like a Rolling Stone). Surprise guest artist was Van Morrison, duetting with Bob in It's All Over Now, Baby Blue and performing his own Tupelo Honey. The concert opened with a thunderous version of Highway 61, included an acoustic set with Hard Rain and To Ramona, Dylan is joined at the end by Carlos Santana (whose band had played for two hours earlier in the day) contributing stratospheric guitar solos. The only fly in the ointment is Bono, who came on for the jam session at the end and did his best to ruin Blowin in the Wind, but he was a minor detail. For me a great memory, but also a great live Dylan recording by any standards.
