Wolverton for the Fanatic With reservations
Gorgeous reproduction of the work of a unique cartoonist's distinctive work --high-resolution photography that doesn't just REPRODUCE the artwork, but shows it AS DRAWN, with the surface texture and pencil marks in glorious detail-- mark this notable collection, and Bray's collection of Wolverton originals is notable indeed. But this may also be one of the book's biggest faults: what's NOT in it as what IS. When an NYC gallery exhibited a selection of Bray's artwork in conjunction with the release of this book, for this viewer the centerpiece was beholding the original artwork for Wolverton's MAD #11 cover, "Beautiful Girl Of The Month Reads Mad," one of Wolverton's most glorious faces. Well, there's a copy of the cover in this book, but why wasn't the publisher permitted to reproduce the artwork in the manner of the rest of the pieces in the book-- as described above? Were they denied permission by DC/Warner (owners of MAD)? Was that artwork a loaner to the exhibit and NOT owned by Bray? I wanted to see a tally of Bray's entire collection of Wolverton artwork-- since this book is as much an ego boost for a fanatic collector as it is a collection of beautiful images-- if only to know what WASN'T included in the book. In any case, at the discount many eBay sellers offer this book for, it's an acquisition well worth it. At full price? Not so much.

The ONLY collection of Jay Stephens Overlooked Oddville Strip
A beautifully designed package of Jay Stephens sadly overlooked comic strip, this collection is a satisfying meal for anyone who hungers for a comic strip with a uniqueness unseen since Watterson's Calvin & Hobbes. There's a lot of Stephen's Oddville out there, in other forms (like great comic books and comics books) but the strip is here, in this collection, and if you're a fan, you owe it to yourself to snap this one up.
