An Inauthentic Biography
As a voracious reader with a great appreciation of biography and autobiography, I was looking forward to this portrait of the accomplished American designer of fashion and home. I'm familiar with Ralph Lauren's work and with his philanthropy. He's a Horatio Alger story with a strong work ethic and he is a family man. So let's dig deeper.
Michael Gross doesn't seem to have a bone to pick, more like a dagger to stick. I've read some of his previous work which seemed to be nothing but tabloid journalism in hardcover. This biography takes the cake in it's hatefulness of Ralph Lauren the man, the brand, the myth. Rather than being investigative and revealing it is simply bitter.
We are all flawed but there is nothing authentic about a hate campaign marketed as a biography.

The Classics
There are a lot of films from the 80s that would hold up well if only the soundtrack was reimagined. Think heavy synthesizer. Both of these films have aged beautifully with solid music supporting absolutely delightful performances and madcap 30s storytelling.
Both are worth the price of admission.
