Gotta love Opera Australia!
Far too many performances of Gilbert and Sullivan are great on singing, but dismal on acting. Because G&S is supposed to be humorous as well as satirical much of this is lost when the performers don't act while they sing. This collection has both beautifully done, but then again it is the Opera Australia performances and in my humble opinion, they have always done excellently with Gilbert and Sullivan. I would highly recommend this to any that are G&S fans as I am.

Necessary Volume for the Student of the Bible
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich Vine's Expository Dictionary was an important part of my successful writing of my graduation thesis from Bible College many years ago, and now that my church is starting a library I wanted to include a copy in the anticipation that others will find it as useful as I have. It is time honored and respected by any who consider themselves students of the Word.

Reformation from the Roman Catholic perspective
I purchased this book on the recommendation of some Roman Catholics I am reasonably familiar with in the hopes of gaining their perspective on the Reformation as begun by Martin Luther. I did so under the knowledge that a 'hostile witness' is given less credibility than a favorable one. I also purchased "Here I Stand" which is the point of view from Luther's perspective but that is a discussion for another time as I have not read it yet. (I read it long ago but have not retained my old copy..)
I do not consider myself a Protestant but most definitely a Christian. I am also not a Roman Catholic, but that should be evident...
The book, Roots of the Reformation was valuable to me because the first section of it gives the history of the "Church" prior to the Reformation and that in itself was quite revealing as one could draw the conclusion that the Roman Catholic Church set itself up for what happened with Luther. The next section of the book was a disappointment as the basic premise was drawn that Luther was mentally unstable which I find deeply offending, but not a surprising conclusion, given that the author is very much a Roman Catholic. I have heard it said more than once that one man's religion is another man's cult. Perhaps this saying found its own 'roots' in the break with Rome...?
I would not draw any conclusion about Luther's mental state any more (or less) than I would about the author's own mental state. Suffice it to say that the author found it necessary to make his case by calling Luther's sanity into question was a cheap shot in my opinion, and blunted the overall scholarship value that was given in the first section of the book.
I would recommend this book only for the insight into the opinions it contains, but not necessarily for the historical content of the overall subject of the Reformation. One will likely have to read some of the "favorable witnesses" in order to gain that.
