Built to last for 100 years
The quality of construction is superb, the sharpness also, but the practical difficulty is to hold the lens steady, especially with the 2x converter. It is a beautiful piece, smaller & lighter than other Nikon 300mm lenses, except only the latest vr 300/4, which is lighter but feels "plasticky". After much testing I found the results from the latest 70-300 DX VR superior because of its stabilisation. If I were a tripod user I would have kept the 300/4.5 IFED, but I am not, so with much sadness I have sold it.

The best of the 1950s 6x30 binoculars
These are the best 6x30 binocular of their time, this has single-layer coating on its lenses, whereas now multi-coating provides higher light transmission & better protection against stray light & veiling glare. It has a wider field of view than most current 6x30s & is at its best as a short range glass. This particular example is close to new condition even after over 60 years!

Best designed lightweight pocket binocular
This is not perfect but all round it is the most practical pocket glass, largely because its offset single hinge avoids the almost universal double hinge in these pocket glasses. Also its simple locking eyecups stay in the extended position - no other rival achieves this (I've tried them all!). In the open air, with a bright sky, the picture has some stray light interference, so do most others, but the Leica Ultravid stands out as the best baffled against this stray light. I would welcome larger diameter eyecups, like the latest Swarovski CL, although this is considerably heavier. The rubber armour protects better than most rivals.
