Great book
This detective story has many layers of interest in addition to the main plot which involves the murder of a young black woman in Portland, Oregon. Her brother, Clarence, a columnist for a Portland newspaper is the main character. My favorite parts are the scenes in Heaven. Alcorn also deals with racism, black history, poverty and other contemporary issues in the development of the story. This book is part of a trilogy that includes Deadline, Dominion and Deception. I'm eager to read the third one. He is one of my favorite writers on Christian themes, both fiction and non-fiction.

Helpful guide to praying
This book is an updated version of the Diary of Private Prayer written by John Baillie in the 1930s. It has a month's prayers, morning and evening that are very helpful in guiding a person to pray about a number of different things each day. I don't usually use prayers composed by someone else, but find these prayers helpful in guiding my thoughts. The print is easy to read, there is a ribbon bound into the book that makes it easy to mark the day you're on. There are a couple of Sunday prayers at the end of the book that can be used on Sunday instead of the prayers offered for one of the numbered days 1-31. I bought a couple of extras to share with friends.

Soul Food
Daily Devotional, nicely laid out. Attractive padded cover. It would make a nice gift. Very strong Biblically. Practical encouragement, challenge and inspiration to walk with God and respond to His word. Each day has a Bible verse at the top that relates to the day's devotional thoughts. A friend commented that this was her favorite devotional, and that encouraged me to buy a copy. I have not been disappointed. The author, Henry Blackaby has published a number of books and Bible studies that have been well received around the world. I like the fact that each month is separated by a titled solid page, making it easier to use.
