I honestly felt like I was there watching those about to die.
Mannix has obviously done much research to present facts; however, he is also honest about what he has created in order to avoid dry scattered facts. For example, he has indicated that characters like Flamma and Carpophorus actually existed but, using descriptions of Roman games, he has incorporated them into the action for an exciting story. It is part history, part historical novel, and one of the very few books of its nature that I literally could not put down.
