Sorta works...
Successfully hung 5lb first picture on drywall using two pins. First pin went in perfectly using a firm blow with the heal of my hand. Second pin jammed using same technique. Used pliers to pull jammed pin from tool. Third try worked fine. An aggressive blow seems to work better, a tentative blow or firm push mey result in failure or a serious jamb.
Marks on base of tool did allow easy alignment but bubble level is flush so working above head was difficult, needed a ladder but got lucky without one.
Used supplied small hook adapters with wire attached to picture frame. Adjusting picture for position and level was easy.
Conclusion: good for lightweight items on soft walls and poster boards but expect occasional tool failures.
May want to consider just using replacement pin sets and a small hammer with needle nose pliers but gitting the correct angle for the pin might be tricky. I suspect a truly effective tool would cost $50 or more, too much for the occasional small job around the house.
Standard push pins do not work, are set at 90 degrees and tend to fall out of soft walls if under pressure. Velcro and tape tend to fail over time with changes in temperature.
