Hot & Steamy in the Deep South - Not Bad for the 1980's
3 von 4 finden das hilfreich I have always wanted to be a critic but with my own spin. Most "professional" critics speak from a high level of art education and are searching for a "deeper" meaning. Me? I want good solid entertainment with a splash of hot and steamy. North and South (all three books made into three seperate miniseries based on John Jakes' novels, North and South, Love and War, and Heaven and Hell) delivered, mostly. The first two books/miniseries were excellent and if this review were just for the first two I would have given a 5/5. Book one starts in the 1840's as two very different men go off to West Point, one from the South and one from the North. They become fast friends and meet their totally vile antagonist, Cadet Bent (played masterfully by Philip Casnoff). The rest of miniseries one, two and three focus on them and their families' struggles through our country's most desperate times. You've probably guessed by now, the larger theme is to present the historical differences between the North and South in the years leading up to the War Between the States (I know there are different names for what happened here in the United States from 1861 to 1864, I choose to call it the War Between the States), the War itself and then what happened after the War. Patrick Swayze (Orry Main) is the gentleman from the South and James Read (George Hazard) is the gentleman from the North. Both deliver excellent portraits of men living their lives from their early 20's through their 50's, transforming from plebs at West Point to generals in two very different American armies to men working to rebuild their lives and their way of life after the bloodiest war the United States has endured. I personally think it might be Swayze's best work. Lesley-Anne Down is the female lead and it must have been written with her in mind. Smart and strong at times, sexy and hot at times and distressed and vulnerable at times; the perfect female role. She starts out as an evil and sadistic plantation owner's (played wonderfully by David Carradine) wife and Orry's forbidden love interest. Then, after her first husband's demise, she becomes Orry's wife and then, big surprise, she ends up with George Hazard. Hot hot hot! Okay I don't want to give too much away because I think you should get it and enjoy it for yourself. Now for the reason I only gave a 3/5 -- BOOK THREE, Heaven and Hell (Hell is exactly where I thought I was when I watched the last of the three miniseries). The first two were made during the 1980's and the last one came out nearly 10 years later in the 1990's. This specific miniseries might be the single cause and reason why we don't see many miniseries any more on TV. It was painful to watch even though there were a few good plot points, hot and steamy scenes and closure for many of the characters you come to love (and hate) as the entire story is presented. I just think the third book could have been presented much much much better and did not do Jakes' final novel of the trilogy justice. However, this entire set IS worth buying; perfect for the long hot summer nights ahead when there is absolute crap on the tube and all you want is some pure mindless (hot and steamy) entertainment.
