Better than the original, more of a teaching tool
On the plus, the load times are far superior to the original. Stopping a song and repeating a riff or lick is also faster and smoother. Song list is good, with a nice variety, although you can no longer unlock new songs by playing gigs. Rather, they are purchased from the store. Plenty of stuff to start on the game disc though.
I like the "session mode", which lets you choose accompanying instruments and just free jam. The program feels out your tempo and key and jumps in to support whatever you feel like playing. I haven't tried any of the exercise games yet, which look similar to those in the original game. I also haven't played with the tone creator much.
If you were comfortable with the playing setup in the original, it's pretty much the same in this one, making the transition pretty painless. It's an improvement overall, and I much enjoy playing and have learned a few new songs as a result, which was the goal. Still have to set up the audio separate from the HDMI to mitigate the lag. I recommend it to friends and their children who are just starting out.
