Not as sad as I'd heard.
This movie managed to elude me for decades - I finally saw that it was available and although I'd never seen it, I took the plunge and bought it. I was expecting a depressing drama based on what reviews I'd read, so I was surprised to find that the movie was humorous and entertaining, even charming at times. The main characters were well developed, the pace was neither rushed nor stagnant, and the music complimented the film quite well. Without giving away any key aspects of the story, I did think that the incident which caused Billy Joe (played to perfection by the inimitable Robby Benson) to jump off the Tallahassee Bridge was a bit mild by today's standards. But then this film was made in 1976, and set a bit further back than that, if I'm not mistaken. All in all, Ode to Billy Joe is worth the purchase price, and worthy of viewing more than once.
